Not traveling anywhere for Spring Break this year? It can be a bummer for the kids (and parents!), but it doesn’t have to be! We’ve put together a list of ideas for a fun-filled staycation with your kids. Let your kids help choose their favorite activities and then schedule your week of fun together. Staying home doesn’t have to be boring!
1. Get outdoors as much as possible.
Go on a hike together as a family. Incorporate a nature scavenger hunt for even more fun!
2. Read a book!
Here are some suggestions for Silver Dolphin titles perfect for springtime:
Ages 0-2: Lots to Spot: Farm
Ages 3 and up: 10, 9, 8…Owls Up Late!
Ages 5 and up: All Aboard the Pirate Ship!
Ages 8 and up: Timeline Science: Dinosaurs
3. Go camping.
Find a campsite nearby or camp out in your own backyard. Grab the sleeping bags, pop up a tent, and make a bonfire, complete with s’mores and ghost stories!
4. Have a movie night at home.
Each kid can pick their favorite movie to watch. If you really want to get creative, you can make movie tickets and set up a concession stand with candy and popcorn.
5. Get some exercise in.
Go on a bike ride around your neighborhood or play a sport like soccer or basketball as a family.
6. Have a craft day.
7. Visit your local park.
Pack a picnic and make a whole day out of it. If you have multiple parks in your area to choose from, make it a goal to visit them all!
Journey across the country (without leaving your home) with Smithsonian Young Explorers: 50 States and learn all about the United States along the way with state trivia and fun facts!
9. Spend the day at a children’s museum or science center.
Be sure to check online or call ahead beforehand, as some places have certain days of the month with reduced or free admission.
10. Have a family game night.
Break out all your favorite board games and snacks! Invite friends over for some more friendly competition.
11. Bake something!
Let your kids pick a recipe to try and bake some cookies or other delicious goodies.
13. Have a pizza party!
Who doesn’t love pizza?! Order in or buy all the ingredients and have the kids make their own. Bonus points for having a make-your-own ice cream sundae bar for dessert!
14. Visit a local farm.
Visiting a farm is educational and entertaining for kids and adults! Do a little research to see if any farms near you offer personal tours.
Is your little one a science-lover? Have fun while learning with Build the Human Body. See the human body like never before through colorful illustrations, fascinating facts, and by building your very own human skeleton!
16. Go for a family drive.
Create a fun playlist with the kids, pack up some snacks, and check out the local sights. You never know what you’ll see along the way!
17. Volunteer at a local charity.
Show your kids the importance of giving back while donating food to a local pantry, cleaning up a park, volunteering at an animal shelter, or any other local charity you’d like to support.
18. Spend a day by the water.
Visit a nearby beach, lake, or pool. If there aren’t any in your area, break out the sprinklers or set up a slip & slide in your backyard and bring the water to you! Invite friends over to share in the fun!
19. Have a spa day at home.
Get some relaxation in. Gather up any supplies you have (nail polish, face masks, bathrobes, slippers, etc.) and turn your bathroom or living room into a spa.
20. Try a new restaurant.
To make it even more exciting, step outside your comfort zone and pick somewhere that serves a type of food you’ve never tried before.
Most of all — make the best of it and HAVE FUN!!
